How to Run BIOS Verification Using Dell Trusted Device

Dell Trusted Device (formerly Dell BIOS Verification) is used to validate that a BIOS has not been compromised or corrupted. This guide covers how to run BIOS verification using Dell Trusted Device.

Note: Dell.SecurityCenter.Agent.Console.exe has been deprecated in version 6.1. For more information about the BIOS Verification as part of the Security Score in Dell Trusted Device 6.1 and later, reference How to Use the Dell Trusted Device Local Console.

Affected Operating Systems:

Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification must first be Run, then the Results must be reviewed. For more information, click the appropriate function.

Run

The process of running BIOS verification varies based on version. For more information about locating the product version, reference How to Identify the Dell Trusted Device Version.

v2.1 to 6.0

Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification can be run through the user interface (UI) or through command-line interface (CLI). Click the appropriate method for more information.

  1. Double-click Dell.SecurityCenter.Agent.Console.exe on the desktop of the device, or from within C:\Program Files\Dell\TrustedDevice\.
  2. The BIOS results are displayed in a browser window.

Note: If an error is encountered, an error message and error code are displayed.
Note: Dell Trusted Device requires administrator rights to run.
  1. Right-click the Windows start menu and then select Run.

  1. In the Run UI (user interface), type cmd and then press CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to run the Command Prompt as an administrator.

  1. Go to the directory containing Dell.SecurityCenter.Agent.Console.exe.

Note: The default directory is C:\Program Files\Dell\TrustedDevice\.
  1. Type Dell.SecurityCenter.Agent.Console.exe -headless and then press Enter.

Running the command

  1. The BIOS results are displayed in the Command Prompt.

Note:
  • If no error is encountered, no result is displayed.
  • If an error is encountered, an error message and error code are displayed.
  • BIOS results are written to the following registry location each time the utility is run: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Dell\BIOSVerification.
  • BIOS results are written to the following folder location each time the utility is run: C:\ProgramData\Dell\BiosVerification\.
  • BIOS results are written to the Windows Event Viewer each time the utility is run. Results are written to Event Viewer (Local) - Applications and Services Logs - Dell.
  • The %ERRORLEVEL% environment variable is updated, which can be queried for results to automate silently gathering BIOS status centrally.

Results

Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification uses return codes to represent each possible result.

Return Code Meaning Additional Information
0 BIOS image passed. The local BIOS is verified against a known-good Dell BIOS.
1 BIOS image failed. The local BIOS failed verification against a known-good Dell BIOS.
2 The verification result is tampered. The verification result is tampered. Ensure that the Dell Trusted Device version is updated and then run BIOS Verification again. If this error persists, contact Dell Support.
3 An unknown error occurred. BIOS verification detail retrieval failed. Run Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification again. If this error persists, contact Dell Support.
4 An invalid command-line argument was specified. A command-line variable passed to BIOS verification is not supported. See the supported command-line syntax for Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification.
5 The utility is running with insufficient privileges. Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification requires local administrator rights to run.
6 An internal error has occurred. An error on the local device occurred, preventing BIOS verification from properly running. Run Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification again. If this error persists, contact Dell Support.
7 The server responded with an error or is unavailable. The Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification server is unavailable. Validate network connectivity and that the web-based locations are accessible from the device.
8 An issue in the driver occurred. Dell Trusted Device's driver failed to load. Run Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification again. If this error persists, reboot the device and try again, or contact Dell Support.
9 An error occurred because the BIOS data used to perform verification is invalid. This local BIOS is not supported with Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification. Ensure that the local BIOS version is updated and run Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification again.
10 This is returned when the -help command-line argument is specified. Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification was run with the -help argument.
11 This is returned if the platform or BIOS image is not supported. Dell Trusted Device BIOS verification does not support this device. If you believe that this device is supported, update the BIOS version. If this error persists, contact Dell Support.
13 Network Connectivity Error Dell Trusted Device BIOS Verification cannot properly reach the back-end infrastructure. Dell Trusted Device leverages certificate pinning, and validating proxy and Deep Packet Inspection/SSL Inspection exceptions for your version.
