Licensing for OpenManage Enterprise

Installing and using OpenManage Enterprise does not require the OpenManage Enterprise Advanced or OpenManage Enterprise Advanced+ license. The OpenManage Enterprise Advanced or Advanced+ license is needed for key automation features (for example bare metal server deployment and cloning, deploying automatically with Service Tags or Node IDs, Power Manager plug-in) as well as for advanced configuration features (for example enforcing configuration compliance, IOA provisioning, and VLAN management, profile management). In addition, the OpenManage Advanced+ license enables plugins for partner integrations (for example Plugin for VMware vCenter). (Note the OpenManage Advanced+ license contains all the features of the OpenManage Advanced license.) Use of advanced features requires that the OpenManage Enterprise Advanced license be installed on the target server. The OpenManage Enterprise Advanced license is a perpetual license that is valid for the life of a server. The license can be bound to the Service Tag of only one server at a time. To view the list of devices and their licenses, select OpenManage Enterprise > Monitor > Reports > License Report, and then click Run.

  • Automated deployment: Deploy PowerEdge servers automatically with service tags or node IDs.
  • Configuration and drift detection: Create firmware and configuration baselines for compliance monitoring and enable automated scheduled updates.
  • Enhanced modular management: Capture and edit chassis templates using the intuitive OpenManage Enterprise user interface.
  • Activate available licensed features of plugins, such as Dell OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager. The Power Manager plug-in can be installed and enables streamlined power management through the OpenManage Enterprise console.

Evaluate, Purchase, and Download of the OpenManage Enterprise Advanced license.

  • Evaluation license: A 90-day evaluation OpenManage Enterprise Advanced trial license is available which includes Dell OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager to fully test and experience all the features. This trial license is limited to work with iDRAC9 Express, Enterprise, and DataCenter licenses only. Learn more and download the license >
  • Purchase license: Advanced License can be included at the time of server purchase or purchased separately by contacting your local Dell Technologies sales representative. The OpenManage Portfolio Software Licensing Guide provides additional information for licensing options for your organization including pricing.
  • Download license: A purchased OpenManage Enterprise Advanced License can be downloaded from Dell Digital Locker. License keys are stored online and can be downloaded if needed. If an existing license key-in not available in the Dell Digital Locker or there is an issue with a license key, contact Dell Technologies Technical Support or Customer Care.

Managing OpenManage Enterprise Licenses

OpenManage Enterprise Advanced or Advanced+ and iDRAC enterprise or data center licenses can be managed on either an individual server or one to many basis. Individual licenses can be imported onto an iDRAC. For one to many OpenManage Enterprise  4.1 or higher has built-in license management with integration to Dell Digital Locker and license deployment.  Dell License Manager  is a stand alone tool where OpenManage Enterprise is not available.
  • Individual server
    Utilize iDRAC to manage OpenManage Enterprise Advanced or Advanced+ Licenses for an individual server. iDRAC web interface, License tab can be used to import, export licenses or the RACADM CLI License command can be used to manage licenses as described in the RACADM CLI Guide.
  • Group of servers
    In addition to the licensing management built into OpenManage Enterprise Dell offers Dell License Manager. Dell License Manager is a stand alone one-to-many license deployment and reporting tool for OpenManage Enterprise Advanced, OpenManage Enterprise Advanced+, iDRAC, and CMC licenses. By using License Manager, a user can download, bind, deploy, inventory and back up OpenManage Enterprise Advanced Licenses as well as iDRAC, CMC, and storage sled licenses. This tool can also inventory licensable systems to report the licensing status and features of the enabled management controller.

OpenManage Enterprise is an appliance that is deployed to a hypervisor. 
OpenManage Enterprise can be installed on VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, or Kernel-based KVM. See Deployment section in the OpenManage Enterprise User Guide.

Migrate from 3.10.x version to OpenManage Enterprise 4.1

Migration to OpenManage Enterprise version 4.2 from older 3.10.x versions is not supported. First install OpenManage Enterprise 4.1 as a new appliance then follow the instructions to migrate data from previous version OpenManage Enterprise 3.10.x. Once migrated to 4.1 use standard upgrade method to move to latest version.   
Note: You must be on OpenManage Enterprise version 3.10.x to "migrate" to OpenManage Enterprise 4.1

New Features in OpenManage Enterprise 4.1
OpenManage Enterprise 4.1 and associated plugins include the Dell License Manager (DLM) functionality. This allows customers to access their Dell license vault and bind/upgrade the systems management licenses to specific servers directly from OpenManage Enterprise. It also includes enhancements to template deployment and extensive security improvements. 

Note: OpenManage Enterprise 4.1 replaces OpenManage Enterprise 4.0 and OpenManage Enterprise 4.0.1 for all future downloads. OpenManage Enterprise versions 4.0 and OpenManage Enterprise 4.0.1 were removed from Dell download sites. 
 
Supported since 4.0:
  • Support for customers who use CyberArk Credential Provider software. OpenManage Enterprise can now access iDRAC passwords from the CyberArk vault.
  • OpenManage Enterprise can now create a new set of encrypted credentials to access iDRAC, and also regularly rotate them automatically.

  • OpenManage Enterprise 3.10.1 includes support for the following.
    • Allow users to select whether to manage devices (such as iDRAC) access to the OpenManage Enterprise appliance's internal share using IP or FQDN
New Features in OpenManage Enterprise 3.9.2/3.10 

This section covers two separate releases (1) OpenManage Enterprise 3.9.2 and (2) OpenManage Enterprise 3.10 and the associated plugins.

  • OpenManage Enterprise 3.9.2 includes support for the following, in addition to quality improvements
    • Increased the maximum number of user accounts from 64 to 1,000 (local or AD or LDAP)
    • Send email (test email or genuine traps) when SMTP port is configured as 587 (in addition to SMTP port 465)
  • OpenManage Enterprise 3.10 is a major release of OpenManage Enterprise and the associated plugins, with a list of supported features included below.
    OpenManage Enterprise Appliance Back up and Restore
    • Securely backup OpenManage Enterprise and all plugins to a shared drive and restore. This feature allows an admin to backup and restores all user-created or generated content on the appliance, settings, accounts, groups, reports, device inventory, templates, jobs, schedules, and so forth
    • Create a backup manually; or perform automated daily or weekly backups.
    Ease-of-use
    • Forwarded alerts now contain the device IP address (instead of OpenManage Enterprise IP address) when forwarding to a syslog server or forwarding SNMP traps
    • The new Warranty section in the Device Details page provides a quick view of device warranty status, and amount of days left
    • Enable users to access iDRAC virtual console without requiring iDRAC credentials
    • Email configuration supports Connection Encryption types for STARTLS or SSL or TLS
    • More details on the Device Details page for Device Discovery Information (iDRAC account the system was discovered with, Discovery range and Protocol used for discovery)
    • Download firmware update packages using HTTPS as integrated share for iDRAC8 or 13G servers
    • Chassis alerts are processed through the Alert Policy even if one or more Alert Categories are cleared while creating the Alert Policy
    • Forwarded alerts in normalized format now have proper Warning or Critical severity and not "Information"
    • Send email (test email or genuine traps) when SMTP port is configured as 587 (in addition to SMTP port 465) - Supported in OpenManage Enterprise 3.9.2 also
