The following article provides information about a change in the Power Button behaviour on new Dell portable systems that supports modern standby.

Dell has implemented a change to the behaviour of the power button on new Dell portable systems to meet Microsoft requirements for modern standby.

If you hold down the power button on a new Dell portable system that supports modern standby for 5 seconds, then the swipe to shutdown screen should appear:

Note: This new specification is that new portable systems that support modern standby will now show the Swipe to Shutdown screen regardless of if the system ships with a touch or non-touch screen. This allows for the last chance to perform a normal shut down by the operating system.

On older Dell portable systems and those that don't support modern standby, holding down the power button for 5 seconds will force the system to shutdown.

This is known as a Dirty/Forced Shutdown:

• The term does not necessarily mean causing a loss of data, but it can make accessing some data impossible without the help of specialist data recovery hardware and experience. Many of the storage/boot drives that are sent in for recovery are often in a failed state because of a power glitch or being forced to power off while in use.

Note: The power button behaviour is working as designed and there is no way to change or configure this behaviour on these systems.

However, for those needing the option to force one of these new Dell portable systems with modern standby to power off, holding down the power button for 10 seconds will override the power button behaviour and perform a forced/dirty shutdown.
