Partition Configured on the Internal Hard Disk on the PowerEdge Server

On the PowerEdge server with ESXi installed on an SD card or BOSS at the time of purchase, a partition used for a test is created in the internal hard disk at the factory.
If you attempt to create a VMFS datastore without clear this partition, you will fail to create a VMFS datastore.
Follow the below sections to clear the partition and create a VMFS datastore.

Clear the Partition Configured at the Factory

  1. Turn on the PowerEdge server and launch the ESXi installed on an SD card or BOSS.

  2. Specify the target ESXi IP address via the Web browser.

HOW16886_en_US__1icon ESXi IP address is displayed on the PowerEdge server console screen.

  3. Connect to the VMware Host Client and login with a root user.

  4. Select Storage from the left tree and click Devices tab.

  5. Right-click the device name of the target internal hard disk from the list and select Clear partition table.

HOW16886_en_US__1icon Ensure the target internal hard disk by type, capacity, vendor, etc displayed in the list.
    Example: Type=Disk, Capacity=x.xxTB, Vendor=DELL

  6. When the warning message regarding the delete of data included the device is displayed, ensure the selected device is the internal hard disk and click OK.
