Connecting to the Switch From a Web Browser

The Dell PowerConnect 3024, 3048, 5012, and 5224 switches can be managed through a Web browser, a Telnet session, or a serial null-modem cable. The Dell PowerConnect 3024 and 5012 managed switches use an embedded Web server that allows for management tasks to be accomplished from Microsoft® Internet Explorer® version 4.01 (and higher) or Netscape Navigator 6.0 (and higher).

Connecting to the Dell PowerConnect switches with the serial null-modem cable is the only way that you can watch the progress of the switch booting up.

The default IP address on the switch is 192.168.0.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.  For more information about changing the IP address of your Dell PowerConnect switch, refer to the Dell Knowledge Base Article How do I change the IP address of my Dell PowerConnect 3024 or 5012 switch 

  1. Launch your Web browser.
  2. In the Address bar, type .192.168.0.1. The default IP Address is the IP address of the switch, and then press <Enter>
  3. If password protection is enabled on the switch, type root as the user and type the password that is assigned to the switch. The default password is switch.
  4. In the Main Menu, configure the PowerConnect settings.

 


 

Connect to the Switch From a Telnet Session

  1. Click the Start button, and then click Run. The Run window appears
  2. Type cmd in the Open box.
  3. Click OK. The command prompt appears and then press the <Enter> key.telnetType
  4. The telnet session will start and you will be at a Microsoft Telnet prompt.
  5. Type open < IP Address >, where < IP Address > is the IP Address of the switch.
  6. The default IP Address is 192.168.0.1.
  7. If password protection is enabled on the switch, you will need to enter root as the user with the password that is assigned to the switch.
  8. The default password is switch.
  9. The Main Menu appears. You can configure the PowerConnect settings from this interface.
  10. Once you are finished with the telnet session, press the <Ctrl> and <D> keys at the same time to end the telnet connection.
  11. At the Microsoft Telnet prompt, type quit and press the <Enter> key to close the telnet session.​​​​​​​

Connect to the Switch From a Serial Null Modem Connection   

The serial cable that shipped with the switch is a null modem cable. Use this cable to attach to the switch
 
  1. Connect one end of the cable to a free serial port on your computer system and the other end to the switch.
  2. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  3. Type cmd in the Open box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Type hypertrm and then press the <Enter> key.
  6. If prompted, type your area code and click OK, and then OK again.
  7. In the Connection Description window, type a name for the connection and then click to select an icon.
  8. Click OK.
  9. In the Connect To window, verify that the Connect using selection is the serial port that you connected the null modem cable to and then click OK.
  10. In the COM Properties window, click to select 9600 Bits per second, 8 Data bits, None for Parity, 1 Stop bits and None for Flow control, and then click OK.
  11. In the bottom-right corner of the HyperTerminal window, you will see Connected, and a clock counting up, press the <Ctrl> + <L> keys at the same time to refresh the screen.
    When the Main Menu appears, configure the PowerConnect settings from this interface.
