Oireet

GPS module cannot be awakened to access NMEA data using the UART interface

Owners of the Latitude Rugged 5430 and Latitude Rugged Extreme 7330 laptop find the following issue with the M9N Global Positioning System (GPS) module:

The GPS module fails to wake-up and provide access to National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) data. This occurs under the following conditions:

  • The laptop runs the Windows 11 operating system.
  • The laptop goes to sleep or idles for over 1 minute.
  • The map application is closed.
  • You attempt to check the NMEA Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data.

The Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter (UART) interface cannot communicate while in a Suspend state.

The Universal GNSS (UGNSS) driver supports both Selective Suspend and DFx.

The Windows Hardware Lab Kit (HLK) certification requires this driver to pass. GNSS is stopped to reduce the power consumption.

The module and driver are working as designed.

Tarkkuus

The module and driver are working as designed. However, you can configure the driver to allow the UGNSS to get the NMEA data from the UART interface. You can do this by disabling the suspend mode. However, you need to be aware that this affects the power consumption on your laptop.

The following step-by-step instructions take you through disabling suspend:

  1. Open the Device Manager utility in Windows:

    • You can click the Start Menu, type Device Manager and choose the option from the search results.

    • You can press the Windows Key and the Pause Key together.

    • You can right-click the Windows Key and select Device Manager from the Power Users menu that appears.

  2. Browse down to the Sensors section.

  3. Open the section and right click on u-blox Universal GNSS.

  4. Select properties from the menu that appears. (see Figure.1)

  5. Go to and select the Power Management tab.

  6. Clear the check box for the option to Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. (see Figure.2)

Note: This increases the power consumption of your computer. So if you want the laptop to maximize the battery life for Modern Standby at any time. You need to go back in and check this option. However, the issue with the GPS returns.
