Using the DellConnect feature to update your BIOS outside of the operating system

The Dell BIOS can be updated outside the operating system of the computer. This article describes how to update the BIOS using the DELLConnect feature of your computer. This feature was first made available on Dell computers in 2020.

• Attached BIOSConnect: Where most of the BIOSConnect software components reside on the service partition of the hard drive. Formatting the hard drive results in the loss of BIOSConnect capabilities.
• Hybrid BIOSConnect: Where most of the BIOSConnect software components, except the wireless driver stack, reside on the firmware. Formatting the hard drive affects the BIOSConnect capabilities. BIOSConnect can start SupportAssist OS Recovery only if your computer is connected to the Internet through a wired Internet connection.
• Embedded BIOSConnect: Where all BIOSConnect software components, including supported wireless driver stack, reside on the firmware. Loss or damage of a hard drive partition does not impact BIOSConnect wireless capabilities.

Instructions on updating the BIOS using DellConnect

Starting with your computer turned off, but connected to a working external power source, use the following steps:

1. Turn the computer on and press the F12 key at the Dell Splash screen to enter the One-Time Boot Menu.

   

2. Select the BIOS Flash update - Remote option.

   

3. Does BIOSConnect detect a wired Ethernet connection?

   

   • Yes, a wired connection is detected. BIOSConnect downloads the latest BIOS update available on the Dell Support Site. (Go to Step 6.)

   • No, it does not detect a wired connection. BIOSConnect displays a list of the wireless networks that are detected.

4. Select your network from the list, enter your network password, and press the connect button.

   

5. Now you have a network connection, click the Update BIOS button.

   

6. The most recent version of the BIOS update downloads to your computer.

   

7. BIOSConnect displays the current BIOS version and the update BIOS version. Click Yes to update to that BIOS. (Where the BIOS versions are the same, it gives you an option to Exit.)

   

8. Once the progress bar completes, the BIOS update finishes installation.

   

9. The computer restarts and boots to the operating system.
