PowerProtect: PPDM NAS Search during File Level Recover shows files with backup dates that exceed the retention period

Summary: Search during File Level Recover shows files with backup dates that exceed the retention period.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

As part of the File level recovery workflow, the "Backup Date" shown for some of the files/folders as part of the file search may be older than the backup retention date.

For example, the NAS asset "test2winshare" has three backup copies from the month of October.

This means that no copy exists older than 11th October.

However, the file search window for the NAS asset shows files with a backup date from 7th September.

The reason for this behavior is that the file has not changed since 7th September.
As per the last backup of the NAS asset, the version of the file which is currently present on the share is the same as the one that was present on 7th September.

Cause

  • When a file is created on a NAS share, the next backup will capture a copy of the file and mark it with the first date the file was backed up.
  • While the file is still present on the share and backups are taken regularly, the file will still show in the search with the first backup date as it has not changed since it was originally backed up.
  • As the file is still present on the share the retention will never be exceeded as the file is still present for subsequent backups.
  • If the file is removed from the share, the file will still show in the search until the retention on the file is exceeded and will then be removed.
  • If the file is modified, two copies or versions of the file show in the search until the retention of the original file is exceeded.
  • Once the retention has passed on the original copy of the file, the entry for the original copy of the file will be removed from the search.

Resolution

This is the expected behavior of files listed when searching during a File Level Recovery for NAS assets.
