Symptoms

The issue is seen on unencrypted Unity XT systems regardless of code level. Affected drives are listed in the Additional Information field.

This issue affects data drives only (system drives are not susceptible to this issue), and only while they are being brought online for the first time.

Cause

A deficiency in Unity OE causes the drive's initial zero to fail, producing multi-bit CRC errors and drive failures following the first I/O to the drives.

Resolution

Upgrade to Dell EMC Unity OE version 5.1.1.0.5.005 (or later). Best practice is to upgrade after susceptible drives are first inserted into the system, before any reboots. However, the code can be applied to an "in-production" system before a pool expansion, creation of a RAID group, or creation of a pool.

Additional Information

This is the list of affected part numbers. Note: The only drive firmware version available today is S109. Drives with firmware version S109 are affected. Firmware S10C has a change that avoids this OE deficiency however, it is recommended to update to Dell Unity OE version 5.1.1.0.005 or later as the primary corrective action.
