How to Configure Your PC or Server for SMB (Server Message Block) Scanning on Dell Laser Printers

1. Windows Vista

 

Create a new folder on the computer.

Share the folder using Simple File Sharing.

  • Right click on the created folder and select Properties.
  • Click on the Sharing tab.
  • Click the Share button.
  • Type "Everyone" in the text box and click Add. Change the permission level to "Co-Owner" and click on Share.
  • The folder is now shared. Click Done.
  • Click on Advanced Sharing to check the advanced share properties.
  • Check the "Share this Folder" box if it is not already checked and click on "Permissions".
  • Ensure that the group "Everyone" is in the list with all the Permission types checked. If Everyone is not listed, click on the Add button and add the group.

Add security rights to the shared folder.

Once the shared folder is created and permissions are given, the user(s) trying to access the folder need to have security rights to the folder.

  • Right click on the created folder and select Properties.
  • Click the Security Tab and then click on the Edit button.
  • Click on the Add button.
  • Type the name "everyone" into the large box and click Check Names. "Everyone" will be listed and then select OK.
  • Make sure that "Everyone" is highlighted under Group or User Names and then check Full Control below.
  • Select OK.

Obtain the IP address of the system.

Please save the IP address of the system somewhere for reference as it will be used in the printer setup.

  • From the desktop, click on the Start button.
  • In the search box, type: CMD and press enter.
  • Once the Command Prompt opens, type: "ipconfig" and press enter.
  • The IP address will then be listed (example: 192.168.1.200).

Once you have the IP address you will need to log into the printers Embedded Web Server to enter the user information.

2. Windows 7

7. Mac OS X

 

Create a shared folder.

  • Create a new folder on the computer.
  • Click on the Apple icon in the top left corner and select System Preferences.
  • Click on Sharing and then check the File Sharing box to enable file sharing.
  • Next, add the created folder by clicking the Plus (+) symbol below the list of shared folders.
  • Select the created folder and then click Add.
  • On the right hand column, configure the share access for the scan folder. Select Everyone, and then select Read & Write.
  • After configuring the share rights, click on Options.
  • Check the Share Files and Folders Using SMB box, and make sure the user account check box is checked.
  • Click Done.

Obtain the IP address of the system.

  • Go to System Preferences.
  • Select Network.
  • Write down the IP address listed on the network screen.

Once you have the IP address you will need to log into the printers Embedded Web Server to enter the user information.
