AMD (ATI) Eyefinity Graphics

Eyefinity is a technology created by AMD for its line of advanced graphics adapters. AMD Eyefinity technology is supported by graphics cards in the ATI Radeon HD 5400 series and higher configured with DisplayPort technology. To allow support for three or more monitor outputs, "active" DisplayPort adapters (dongles) or monitors with direct DisplayPort connectivity must be used. Microsoft Windows10, 8.x, 7, Windows Vista, or Linux are required in order to support more than two displays.

NOTE: Eyefinity configurations are not supported in Microsoft Windows XP and earlier operating systems.

Eyefinity configurations are not supported in Microsoft Windows XP and earlier operating systems.

For M6600, M6700, M6800, M4600, M4700 & M4800 Precision Mobile workstations equipped with AMD Eyefinity graphics, can support 3 displays using the internal LCD, HDMI and DisplayPort (Either Display port to DisplayPort connection or using an Active Eyefinity Certified Adapter.) video connections on the chassis. These systems require the following hardware to configure 4 or more displays:

  1. A Precision Mobile workstation with AMD (ATI) Graphics adapter
  2. An E-Port Plus or E-Port Plus II advanced port replicator (APR)
  3. LCD External displays with DisplayPort (DP) input or DisplayPort Active adapters (Dell Part number RN699 [VGA],XT625 [DVI w/USB])
Once all required hardware is available, configure the system as follows:
  1. With the system docked on the E-Port Plus APR, Connect the 1st external display via the VGA connection on the APR.
  2. Connect the 2nd external display via DisplayPort (Either DisplayPort cable or adapter as listed above)
  3. or HDMI connection on the system (If available).
NOTE: To connect a 3rd, 4th or 5th display, The DVI connections on the E-Port Plus or the HDMI connection on the system CANNOT BE USED.
  1. For the third display, (internal LCD, VGA & a 3rd display via DisplayPort) or (DisplayPort adapter on DP1 or VGA, DP1 & DP2) The VGA display should be configured 1st then the DP display(s)
  2. For the 4th display (Internal LCD, VGA, DP1 & DP2) or (VGA, DP1, DP2 & DP on side of the workstation) The VGA display should be configured 1st then the DP display(s)
  3. For the 5th display (Internal LCD, VGA, DP1, DP2 & DP on side of the workstation) The VGA display should be configured 1st then the DP display(s)

Nvidia with RGB Display

Precision M4600/M4700/M6600/M6700 Systems that are equipped with Nvidia graphics and an RGB (Digital) LCD are limited to 2 displays.

Nvidia without RGB Display

The Precision M4700/M6700/M4800/M6800 Systems equipped with the Nvidia Quadro Kx000M series graphics adapters can support 4 displays using an E-Port Plus series Advanced Port Replicator (APR). The 4 displays are System LCD, VGA, DVI1 or DisplayPort 1 & DVI2 or DisplayPort2 ports on the APR.

Configuration of the displays must be done in the Nvidia control panel that can be accessed by right-clicking the desktop background and clicking the Nvidia Control Panel. Once in the Nvidia control panel, Click Set up multiple displays on the left side under the displays category, then select the displays desired to be shown in the right panel.  Click Apply in the bottom right of the Nvidia Control Panel to save your settings and then click Yes to confirm.

In lab testing in some initial configurations, 2 displays were cloned, and one or more displays were unchecked under the Quadro Kx000M section of the nVidia Properties screen. Right clicking the cloned displays (1 display box with display 1 & 2 shown in the same box indicates cloned display) the clicking extend allowed for those displays to display different images.  If a display is unchecked, click the checkbox to select the display, then click the Apply button and then the Yes button to confirm the changes.

Nvidia with Optimus Graphics

Systems equipped with Optimus technology have Nvidia Graphics plus Intel integrated graphics this allows for a configuration of up to 4 displays (2 digital displays on nVidia using DVI or DisplayPorts on the APR or HDMI on the system, the LCD and a VGA display on Intel.)

To configure 3 or 4 displays do the following:

  1. Boot to the system setup (BIOS) using F2 at boot and ensure that Optimus is enabled in the Video settings (If Optimus is not an option in the BIOS see sections 1 & 2 above).
  2. With the system docked in the APR, boot to Windows, then Connect the 1st external Display on VGA and configure the display settings to extend the display across both screens
