Top Cover LEDs

The three LED indicator lights on the top cover and above the keyboard of the system specify the following:

LED Features

1. Power light - Computer power management indicator.

Power State LED Behavior

On

Solid white

Standby

Breathe white (slow increase/decrease in illumination)

Hibernate

Off

2. HDD activity light - Hard drive activity indicator. Blinking white when the laptop reads or writes data.

Note: To avoid data loss, users should never turn off the laptop while the HDD activity indicator is flashing.

3. Battery light - Battery power management indicator.

Battery State LED Behavior Action

An unauthenticated or unsupported non-Dell AC adapter is attached to your notebook.

Alternately blinking amber light and white light

Try testing the notebook with a known good adapter.
Where possible test the system on a docking station to see if the error changes. 

Temporary battery failure with AC adapter present.

Alternately blinking amber light with steady white light

Try re-seating the battery where possible.
If available test the system with a known good battery to see if the error changes.
Try running the online battery diagnostics.  

Fatal battery failure with AC adapter present.

Constantly blinking amber light

Try re-seating the battery where possible.
If available test the system with a known good battery to see if the error changes.
Try running the 
online battery diagnostics
If this error remains the battery will need to be replaced.

Battery in full charge mode with AC adapter present.

Light off

No action required battery fully charged.

Battery in charge mode with AC adapter present.

White light on

No action required battery charging as normal.
