SC Customer Notification: BMC IP Address Settings on SCv20x0 and SC4020 Should be Non-routable

Summary: SCv20x0 and SC4020 controllers should have BMC IP address set to be non-routable to avoid controller reset or disruptions to service.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Symptoms

This alert pertains to having proper BMC IP address settings on SCv20x0 and SC4020 Storage Centers due to the MegaRac BMC that is on them. It contains specific information related to system features and functionality.

Alert:

The BMC IP address settings on the SCv20x0 and SC4020 systems should be set as non-routable using the IP Scheme below due to these two systems having a MegaRac BMC system instead of an iDrac.  If the BMC IP addresses are routable within the network there is a possibility of the BMC getting into an unresponsive state.  This could result in alerts for enclosures, sensors and power supplies, up to and including an unplanned reset of the controller.

Affected versions:
Storage Center software version 6.5.x and later

Cause

BMC can be overwhelmed with traffic if the IPs are routable.

Resolution

This is functioning as designed.

Workaround:
If a controller’s BMC becomes unresponsive, the controller must be reseated in the chassis to drain power from the BMC. Once the controller is reinserted into the chassis and has finished rebooting, change the IP address of the BMC to be non-routable. The BMC Address settings are found in the controller properties within Unisphere or Dell Storage Manager. It is recommended that the BMC IP addresses be configured to a different subnet than the management interfaces.

An example is below:

Top Controller:
BMC IP address:   169.254.0.1

Subnet Mask:      255.255.255.0

BMC Gateway:      0.0.0.0
Bottom Controller:
BMC IP address:   169.254.0.2

Subnet Mask:      255.255.255.0

BMC Gateway:      0.0.0.0

Note: The above recommended settings may not be ideal for your network. A full review of the environment's IP and Subnet scheme should be reviewed prior to making these changes.

Non-routable BMC settings also pertain to any of the other versions of Storage Center from the SCv3000 series up to the SC9000 series. These other series Storage Centers have an iDRAC system for the BMC and have the ability to use either the above IP scheme, or the IPs can be set to all 0s:

Top Controller:
BMC IP address:   0.0.0.0

Subnet Mask:      0.0.0.0

BMC Gateway:      0.0.0.0
Bottom Controller:
BMC IP address:   0.0.0.0

Subnet Mask:      0.0.0.0

BMC Gateway:      0.0.0.0
