Symptoms

Dell EMC PowerEdge servers with a Second Generation AMD EPYC processor may not boot to Windows Server 2019 after installing the Hyper-V role. The operating system can go into a recovery state or a blue screen (stop error) can occur indicating an inaccessible boot device.  
 

Note: Other errors or circumstances may occur when installing the Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V role on Dell PowerEdge server with Second Generation AMD EPYC processors.

Cause

Dell Technologies PowerEdge servers with Second Generation AMD EPYC processors fail to boot after installing the Hyper-V role.

Resolution

Perform the following steps to install the Windows Server 2019 Hyper-V role on the affected PowerEdge servers: 

  1. Install Windows Server 2019
  2. Install the latest servicing stack update from the Microsoft Update Catalog which can be found hereThis hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
  3. Install the June 2019 Cumulative Update KB4501371 or newer found hereThis hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
  4. Restart the server
  5. Install the Hyper-V role

Perform the following steps to recover the operating system when the operating system goes into a recovery state or a blue screen (stop error) occurs:

  1. Power off the PowerEdge server
  2. Power on the PowerEdge server and enter the BIOS by pressing F2 information can be found here
  3. Navigate to Processor Settings and disable Virtualization Technology
  4. Exit the BIOS saving the settings and reboot the PowerEdge server to the operating system
  5. Install the latest servicing stack update from the Microsoft Update Catalog which can be found hereThis hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
  6. Install the June 2019 Cumulative Update KB4501371 or newer found hereThis hyperlink is taking you to a website outside of Dell Technologies.
  7. Restart the server and enter the BIOS by pressing F2
  8. Navigate to Processor Settings and enable Virtualization Technology
  9. Exit the BIOS saving the settings and reboot the PowerEdge server to the operating system

Note: Dell EMC PowerEdge servers shipped after December 10, 2019 with factory-installed Windows Server 2019 OEM is not impacted by this issue.
