VNX, Dell EMC Unity: Solid State Drives reports error 02/04/01 or a 04/29/04 internal reset may experience data loss or coherency situation (Dell EMC Correctable)

Symptoms



Solid state drives may experience a 04/29-04 internal reset which may result in data loss or coherency situation.

The following solid state drive part numbers running EQP4 firmware are impacted by this issue:
  • 005051719
  • 005051720
  • 005051721
  • 005051723
  • 005052151
  • 005052152
  • 005052156
  • 005052157
  • 005052158
  • 005052159
The following solid state drive part numbers running EQH7 firmware are impacted by this issue:
  • 005052112 
  • 005052113
  • 005052128
  • 005052129

Cause

Affected solid state drives listed in the Issue section may experience 04/29-04 internal reset and cache data that was not committed may be lost resulting in a data loss or coherency situation.

The cause of this internal reset for drives listed below is due to one of the following:
  1. Drives running EQP4/EQH7 firmware
  2. Drive experiences a transient hardware fault (with any firmware version).

Resolution

Note: This issue impacts drives referenced in the Issue section that are installed in VNX2 or Dell EMC Unity arrays.

If you have encountered this issue or you are experiencing data loss, contact EMC Customer Service for assistance or open a Service Request (SR) on the Online Support site (https://support.emc.com). Reference this knowledgebase article number in your SR.

If you have not encountered this issue it is highly recommended to perform the following two updates:
  1. Drives running EQP4/EQH7 firmware should be updated to EQP6/EQHA firmware or newer (as of this article the latest firmware is EQP9/EQHA).
For VNX Series Arrays:

For Dell EMC Unity Arrays:
Refer to Knowledgebase article Dell EMC Unity: Drive Firmware Upgrade Instructions and Information for Dell EMC Unity drive firmware upgrade information and installation. Operating Environment updates to detect the 04/29-04 and remove the drive to avoid coherency errors
  • Dell EMC Unity should be updated to 4.3.1.1525703027 or later. 
Note: All Dell EMC Unity arrays with these drives and running Operating Environment 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 are impacted by this issue. All arrays with these drives running EQHA firmware and Operating Environment 4.3 are not impacted by this issue.  
  • VNX2 update will be available in the next VNX2 Operating Environment Release
Dell EMC Unity Operating Environment Upgrade Procedure:
  1. Login to Dell EMC Unity and launch Unisphere.
  2. Select Settings icon on the top right corner
  3. Select Software and Licenses
  4. Select Software updates
  5. Follow the Dell EMC Unity software upgrade wizard and upgrade the Dell EMC Unity Operating Environment to 4.3.1.1525703027 or later.
