Symptoms

You may find your Dell Precision 7540/7740 battery discharging while plugged in when you run graphics and processor-intensive applications such as 3D games, photo or video editing tools, etc.

Cause

Hybrid Power Feature

Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 laptops are designed to support Hybrid Power Mode which takes the advantage of using for a smaller and lighter weight adapter. When the system's total power requirement is more than the capacity of AC adapter, the system will start consuming the battery power without sacrificing the performance. This feature is enabled as long as the battery capacity is above 10%.

With this design, you may encounter the following events when the system is running certain applications such as 3D games, video processing app, etc..., which may put both discrete graphics and processor in heavy loading status.

  • Battery charge does not increase when connected to the power adapter.
  • Battery charges slowly when connected to the power adapter.
  • Battery charge depletes when connected to the power adapter.

Note: Hybrid Power feature cannot be disabled.
