OneFS upgrades require the following phases:

  1. Planning an upgrade
  2. Pre-upgrade
  3. Performing the upgrade
  4. Post-upgrade

Phase 1: Planning an upgrade

Planning for your upgrade prepares you and your cluster for the upgrade process.

Planning an upgrade tasks to complete:

  1. Review required documentation
  2. Determine type of upgrade
  3. Verify upgrade path
  4. Check supportability and compatibility
  5. Assess upgrade impact
  6. Schedule upgrade

Phase 2: Pre-upgrade

Before upgrading OneFS, you must complete several preupgrade tasks. If you do not complete these preupgrade tasks, there is an increased risk of failure during your upgrade.

Pre-upgrade tasks to complete:

  1. Collect cluster information
  2. Resolve events and errors
  3. Verify cluster configuration
  4. Download OneFS installation file
  5. Run the upgrade compatibility check utility
  6. Run the On-Cluster Analysis tool
  7. Run the HealthCheck tool
  8. Back up data
  9. Complete system jobs
  10. Update Node Firmware Package
  11. Update Drive Support Package
  12. Configure IPMI ports
  13. Enable SRS

Phase 3: Performing the upgrade

OneFS can be upgraded in one of three ways:

  • Parallel upgrades. (Recommended for OneFS 8.2.2 and later) Dell Technologies recommends using the parallel upgrade option when upgrading any size of OneFS cluster. Parallel upgrades restart groups of nodes in the OneFS cluster simultaneously, leaving the rest of the cluster available. Parallel upgrades are a fast option while still maintaining client connections.
  • Rolling upgrades. (Recommended for OneFS 8.1.2 and earlier) The rolling upgrade option restarts each node in the OneFS cluster sequentially. Rolling upgrades are the slowest upgrade option while still maintaining client connections.
  • Simultaneous upgrades. The simultaneous upgrade option restarts all the nodes in the cluster simultaneously. Simultaneous upgrades are the fastest upgrade option, but all client connections are lost.

Performing the upgrade tasks to complete:

  1. Perform the upgrade
  2. Commit the upgrade
  3. Verify the upgrade

Phase 4: Post-upgrade

After an upgrade, you should perform several restoration and change management tasks to help ensure that your cluster performs and behaves as expected.

Post-upgrade asks to complete:

  1. Allow upgrade jobs to finish
  2. Verify operational status
  3. Reestablish user privileges
  4. Restore client connections and workflows
  5. Verify Kerberos migration
  6. Restore custom settings
  7. Test custom scripts
