Symptoms

  • Restore to the original namespace works without errors.
 
  • Restore to a new namespace receives errors as seen in the following example:

  • Restore to an existing namespace gets the same error as above, but the imagestreamtags was restored to the namespace, and a second attempt of restore succeeds.

Cause

Investigation with the Red Hat Velero team and image registry team found the following:
The imagestreamtags API can be problematic during restore where the API allows imagestreamtags to be created. This is even though the associated images are missing. A subsequent GET request may fail because GET requires the image to be present.

Resolution

Workaround for PowerProtect Data Manager user:
  1. Perform the restore to an existing namespace, instead of a new namespace.
Although PowerProtect Data Manager reported that the first restore failed, Velero restored all the resources in the namespace.
OpenShift automatically syncs up the imagestreamtags and the associated images.
  1. A second restore completes successfully.
