Symptoms
When you set up your computer, you were required to log in using or creating a Microsoft account.
Cause
If you want to configure your computer to sign into a local account and not sign into a Microsoft account, perform the following steps.
Resolution
- Press and hold the Windows () key, and then press the r key.
- Type netplwiz in the box, and then touch or click OK.
- Select Add.
- Select Sign in without a Microsoft account (not recommended).
- Select Local account.
- If you want to use a password, enter the New Password, Confirm Password, and Password hint boxes.
NOTE: You can leave the New Password and Confirm Password blank, but it means that anyone can access your computer.
- Touch or click Next.
- Touch or click Finish.
- In the Users for this computer: box touch or click the Local account that you just made.
- Touch or click Properties.
- Touch or click the Group Membership tab.
- Select Administrator.
- Touch or click Apply, and then touch or click OK, and then OK again to close out the User Accounts window.
- Press and hold the Ctrl and the Alt key, and then press the Delete key.
- Select Switch user.
- Select the new Local account created listed in the lower-left corner of the screen.
- Touch or click Sign in.
NOTE: If you set up a password, you are asked for it. Otherwise, you are taken to the Choose privacy settings for your device screen (only for the first time you log in to the new local account).
- On the Choose privacy settings for your device screen, make your selections, and then click Accept.
- Now, the new Local account is the default account the computer boots too.
NOTE: If you want to go back to the Microsoft account, select the Microsoft account in the lower left corner of the sign-in screen.
NOTE: You may not be able to see or access any files that are stored locally under the Microsoft account while logged into the Local account.
