All about Dynamic LUN Resizing of Recoverpoint

Summary: This article describes how the Dynamic LUN Resizing feature of RecoverPoint works.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Instructions

Goals

Safely achieve non disruptive LUN expansion protected by RecoverPoint with least WAN bandwidth occupation (NOT Full Sweep, but partial sweep.)

Facts

VNX 1 and 2 as a RecoverPoint splitter with R32 or higher. RecoverPoint 3.5 SP1 or higher.

Solution

With the combination of VNX R32 RP splitter and RP 3.5 SP1, the dynamic LUN resizing feature is supported.  Otherwise, follow manual LUN expansion which requires disabling and enabling CG while expanding LUN. Full sweep is always required when re-enabling CG.

In case RecoverPoint does not recognize expanded space, rescanning the device is recommended. Login to either RPA as admin and run "rescan_san" which kicks all RPA rescanning devices.

Here is how to make use of this feature.

  1. Prerequisite
You cannot “Resize volumes in a replication set” while snap-based replication is enabled. Disable snap-based replication before you resize volumes in a replication set. Confirm whether you are enabling this feature before resizing at RecoverPoint > Protection > Manage Protections > Select CG > Select Link Policy. Snap Replication must be off before resizing.
Prerequisite
  1. Expand Production and DR site LUN.
It can be started at either site.
It cannot be expanded if the LUN is using the following features in the image below. One exception - 1) Storage Group sounds not comprehensive, of course the LUN can stay in storage group while expansion is happening.
LUN
  1. Confirm if RecoverPoint recognizes expanded space.
In this sample, the LUN expanded from 10GB to 20GB. Upon completion of expansion in storage, RecoverPoint automatically recognizes expanded space.
RecoverPoint
  1. Expand replication set.
RecoverPoint > Protection > Manage Protection > Select CG > Select Replication Set > Confirm expanded size shown > Edit Replication Set > Resize
RecoverPoint
  1. Short Initialization starts.
