Symptoms

Unisphere for VMAX 8.3 installation fails with "Error: 8.3 file name creation is disabled", even though the installation volume has the "8dot3 name creation is enabled" status.

Environment:
  • Microsoft Windows 2012
  • Dell EMC Unisphere for VMAX: Ver 8.3

Cause

By default the Windows 8 Dot 3 naming convention is disabled. You need to review the Windows systems path.

Resolution

To address this issue you need to check the "Path" variable in Windows.

This can be done in either one of two ways:
  1. Via the System Information MMC:
My Computer>Properties?Advanced system Properties> Environment Variables>
  • Edit "Path" to include the install path for the SYMCLI\bin file.
  • Also ensure that the standard Windows variables are also there. Removing these will cause the error.
  1. Or from a Command Prompt:
  • Type "Path" from the command line.
You should also verify that the 8.3 naming convention is enabled in Windows 2012, as by default this is disabled. For example:

C:\>fsutil 8dot3name set G: 0
Successfully set 8dot3name behavior.
