Avamar: How to to Safely Shut Down and Restart Avamar
Summary: This article describes how to safely shut down (and restart) an Avamar system for maintenance purposes.
Instructions
avoshutdown is an automated script which simplifies shutting down an Avamar system.
The Avamar should be healthy, and in a "production" state for the commands to work.
All services should be running, and there should be a recent, valid checkpoint.
Procedure:
There are two methods to runavoshutdown
- Trigger the Shutdown or Reboot from the MC user interface:
Server > Server Management > Action > Shutdown or Reboot DPN Grid
If initiated from the UI, the process runs in the background.
Or
- Trigger the Shutdown or Reboot from the command-line interface. This allows additional options such as "precheck" and "auto restart."
- Log in to a PuTTY or SSH session as user admin and switch to root user.
- Run the script with the required options:
Available options when invoking the script over command line:
- avosshutdown help (print this help message and exit)
- avosshutdown precheck (check if a clean Shutdown or Reboot can be performed)
- avosshutdown shutdown (System shutdown for all data nodes and utility node)
- avosshutdown reboot (Reboot all data nodes and utility node)
- avosshutdown reboot autorestart (On a multinode grid, automatically restart services after Shutdown or Reboot)
Single node or Avamar Virtual Edition systems:
Avamar services start automatically when a system is turned on.
Note: Running avosshutdown reboot on a single node grid with Data Domain attached results in services restarting after reboot. Run dpnctl stop before running avoshutdown reboot if you do not want this to occur.
To avoid SSH timeouts while running this commands, consider modification of sshd_config, or run all commands in a Linux screen session.
If Garbage collection is killed by avosshutdown reboot , a checkpoint rollback will be required. Therefore, check that no maintenance task is running by reviewing the output of the status.dpn command.
Multinode systems:
Avamar services must be started manually.
The avosshutdown process:
avosshutdown runs in the background. The script shuts down or reboots both Avamar services and the operating system.
