Dell Latitude 5420 Teardown removal guide for customer replaceable units (CRUS)

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the Base Cover:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

With the closed laptop sitting upside down and flat to the desk, remove the eight (8) retained screws that secure the base cover to the chassis.

Using a non-metallic tool, start at the left-hand side hinge and work clockwise around the edge of the cover to release the cover.

Lift the cover away from the system.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the Memory:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Remove the Base Cover.

The memory is located in the upper middle of the system, between the heatsink and the SSD. Pull the metal securing clips apart to release the DIMM to pop up at an angle to the connector.

Pull the DIMM out of the connector and the system.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the M.2 Solid State Drive:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Remove the Base Cover.

The M.2 2280 SSD is located on the left-hand side, lower of the system. Remove the two screws that secures the M.2 2280 solid-state drive thermal plate to the motherboard. Lift the M.2 2280 solid-state drive thermal plate off the motherboard. Slide and remove the M.2 2280 solid-state drive from the solid-state drive slot on the motherboard.

The M.2 2230 SSD is located on the left-hand side, lower of the system. Remove the two screws that secures the M.2 2230 solid-state drive thermal plate to the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder. Remove the single screw that secure the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder to the system board. Lift the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder off the system board.

Flip the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder and remove the single screw that secure the M.2 2230 solid-state drive to the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder. Slide and remove the M.2 2230 solid-state drive from the M.2 2230 solid-state drive holder.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the Wireless (WiFi) Card:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

4. Remove the Base Cover.

The WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network) card is located on the left-hand side, middle of the system. Remove the screw that secures the WLAN card bracket to the WLAN card. Slide and remove the WLAN card bracket off the WLAN card.

Disconnect the antenna cables from the WLAN card. Slide and remove the WLAN card from the WLAN card slot.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the Cellular 3G Card (WWAN):

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Remove the Base Cover.

The WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) card is located in the top left-hand side corner of the system beside the memory. Remove the screw that secures the end of the WWAN card to the motherboard and remove the securing clip.

Disconnect the antenna cables from the end of the card. (These connectors are press studs and pop off the connector with a little pressure.) The card should be sitting up at an angle from the connector.

Pull the card out of the connector and the system.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the microSD Card:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

The microSD card is located on the outside right-hand side edge of the system.

Push the microSD card into the connector and let it go. The card will pop out of the side of the computer. Pull the card the rest of the way out of the computer.

Pre-Removal instructions before removing the SIM Card:

1. During installation or removal of any hardware always ensures that all data is backed up properly.

2. Disconnect any telephone, network, or USB cables from the computer.

3. Disconnect the computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.

When you look at the system from the rear, the SIM Card slot is on the rear of the system beside the right-hand hinge. Insert a SIM removal tool or pin into the hole in the SIM card tray. The tray will pop out enough for you to grip the tray and pull it out of the computer.
