Dell VxRail: How to Generate CSR (cert signing request) and private keys on PSC

Summary: May need to replace the Vmware SSL certificate on the PSC with a customer certificate generated from the Certificate authority.

Step 1 - Generate CSR (cert signing request) and private keys on PSC :

  1. Login to the PSC
  2.  SSH Root
  3. Create a directory for export and launch the VMware certificate tool

Note: VMware recommends changing only the SSL machine certificate. It is not recommended to change certificates for ESXi, solution users, etc.

       |      4. Regenerate a new VMCA Root Certificate and  replace all certificates                 |
       |      5. Replace Solution user certificates with Custom Certificate                       |

       |      7. Revert last performed operation by re-publishing old certificates
       |      8. Reset all Certificates

  • Copy the resulting CSR and KEY files to your desktop system or simply read it with more and copy text.

Step 2 - Create Certificate :

  • Choose advanced Certificate request

  • Paste in the text from CSR including header and footer.

  • Download the resulting cert and chain to your computer in base64 format.

Step 3   Obtain CA root certificate : 

  • Back to the certificate server page: https://CA/certsrv/
  • Download a CA certificate, certificate chain :

  • Save the chain as cachain.p7b.

  • Open this file with certmgr and export it to a base64 file :

  • Copy the modified cert. files to the PSC using WINSCP :

  • Wait a few min and make sure the PSC is using the certificate and then check VCSA web client (still expected to give certificate warning)
