Symptoms
Unable to see any spare disks in Unisphere for VMAX Symmetrix Details Dashboard.
"Number of Configured Spare Disks" in Unisphere is 0 (zero). Solutions Enabler is also showing none as well:
In Solutions Enabler it shows there is spare coverage:
C:\ symdisk list -sid XXXX -dskgrp_summary -by_engine or symdisk -sid xyz list -isspare
Symmetrix ID: 000XXXXXXXXX

Cause
Architectural changes with VMAX3. Unisphere for VMAX is working as designed.
Resolution
The product is working as designed.
The num_spares field will always be set to 0 for HYPERMAX OS 5977 and later, as dedicated spare disks will no longer exist (spare capacity is used at the Internal Disk Group/Engine level instead). The "Spare Disk" is set to "N/A" for spindles belonging to Internal Disk Group/Engine Spindle Groups on HYPERMAX OS 5977, because there are no dedicated Spare Disks used under this design. Available Spare Capacity is managed at the Internal Disk Group/Engine Spindle Group level.
If the information is not reported by Solutions Enabler, it is not going to be reported by Unisphere for VMAX.
This information will be updated in the Solutions Enabler documentation:
"Dedicated spare disks are not reported for arrays running HYPERMAX OS 5977 or above. For arrays running HYPERMAX OS 5977 or above, spare coverage information is reported at the Disk Group/Engine Spindle Group level. The symdisk list -dskgrp_summary -by_engine CLI display provides this information and is described in the Solutions Enabler Array Management CLI User Guide".
