Symptoms

Enabling SNMP v3 on the iDRACs for alerts to the Azure Stack Administrator Portal are also required to be enabled within Secure Connect Gateway (SCG). It is observed that SCG version 5.18 is not able to receive an SNMP v3 alert from an iDRAC with firmware version 7.00.00.00.

Cause

Per the Secure Connect Gateway release notes for version 5.18, SNMP v3 support is enabled for 14th generation PowerEdge servers with iDRAC firmware 7.00.00.00. However, the SNMP v3 settings required by SCG do not work with the Azure Stack Admin Portal.

Resolution

Modify the iDRAC SNMP alert configuration to enable Redfish based events. This allows both applications to receive alerts.

iDRAC SNMP v3 and Redfish configuration 

Verify that the iDRAC administrator user has been enabled with SNMP v3 settings.

  1. On the iDRAC web UI, browse to iDRAC Settings > Users.
  2. Click Edit on the iDRAC Administrator account.
  3. Scroll down to the Advanced Settings section.
  4. Verify that the SNMP v3 Settings include the following:
    • SNMP v3 - Enabled
    • Authentication Type - SHA
    • Privacy Type - AES

Verify that SNMP alerts are enabled in the Alert Configuration profile on the iDRAC.

  1. On the iDRAC, browse to Configuration > System Settings.
  2. Expand Alert Configuration > Alerts > Alert Configuration section.
  3. Click the check boxes to enable SNMP Trap and Redfish Events.iDRAC Alert Configuration
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of that section and click the Apply button.
  5. Click Ok on the Success display box.
  6. Expand Alert Configuration > SNMP Traps Configuration section.
  7. Verify that alert destination addresses exist (IP addresses to align to your deployment) and the SNMP v3 user assigned is the iDRAC administrator account.
    • Destination address: Privileged Endpoint 1 IP address <X.X.X.224>
    • Destination address: Privileged Endpoint 2 IP address <X.X.X.225>
    • Destination address: Privileged Endpoint 3 IP address <X.X.X.226>
    • Destination address: Dell MGMT-VM IP address <BMC MGMT IP for External 1>iDRAC SNMP Traps Configuration
  8. Click the Apply button for that section.
  9. Click Ok on the Success display box.
  10. Within SNMP Settings, verify that the SNMP Trap format is set to SNMP v3.iDRAC SNMP Service Settings
  11. Click the Apply button.
  12. Click Ok on the Success display box.

Secure Connect Gateway SNMP v3 Settings 

  1. Log in to the Secure Connect Gateway (SCG) application web endpoint.
  2. Browse to the Settings > Environment Configuration page.
  3. Within the Gateway configuration section, expand the SNMP v3 settings menu.
  4. Click the checkbox for Enable SNMP v3.
  5. Provide the credentials to use to authenticate to the iDRAC for SNMP v3 and click Apply. 
    • Username: <iDRAC Administrator username>
    • Security level: Authentication without privacy
    • Authentication type: SHA
    • Authentication password: <iDRAC Administrator password>
