New, blank hard drives are not set up to organize or hold data. Partitioning a hard drive creates sections of the drive that allows the operating system to organize and mount for use. Formatting a hard drive allows the operating system to store data.

Create a partition from unpartitioned space by following these steps:

  1. Right-click the Start menu and select Disk Management
  2. Determine the hard disk to create a new partition.
  3. Right-click the unpartitioned space in the bottom pane and select New Simple Volume.
  4. Enter the size and click Next.
