Dell Technologies support for server power management

Server power management is a key component of Dell PowerEdge servers. Server power management includes:

  • Measure power usage, carbon emissions, and thermal health
  • Mitigate risks from power and cooling events
  • Utilize capacity
  • Set policy-based controls

Dell Technologies enhances your visibility into server power consumption and control utilization through the console’s integration with the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) embedded in Dell PowerEdge servers. OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager is the next generation of server power management. Power Manager lets you view, measure, and control server power consumption and increase your infrastructure’s performance. As an extension to Dell OpenManage Enterprise, this extension is a vital piece of the OpenManage portfolio and provides integration.

OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager replaces OpenManage Power Center. OMPC no longer has additional functionality added.

Licensing for OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager

Use of OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager is included with the OpenManage Enterprise Advanced License. Advanced features of Power Manager depend on the server's iDRAC or modular enclosure license. Advanced licenses are available at server point of sale (POS) and after point of sale (APOS) using these SKUs. The OpenManage Portfolio Software Licensing Guide provides additional information for licensing options for your organization.

A 90-day evaluation OpenManage Enterprise Advanced trial license is available which includes Power Manager to fully test and experience all the features. This trial license is limited to work with iDRAC9 Express, Enterprise, or Data Center licenses. Learn more and download license >.

Dell OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager

Download and install for OpenManage Enterprise Power Manager

Power Manager 3.2 is a plug-in for the OpenManage Enterprise (minimum version 4.0). To download and install or upgrade this extension:

Ensure use of OpenManage Enterprise version 4.0 or newer.
  1. Connectivity to the Power Manager plug-in
    • Online repository: Ensure connectivity to the downloads.dell.com portal from OpenManage Enterprise
    • Offline repository: Download the Power Manager plug-in files and extract to your offline repository
  2. Launch OpenManage Enterprise
  3. In Applications Settings, click Console and Plugins. The Console and Plugin page is displayed.
  4. In the Power Manager section, click Install. The Install plug-in page is displayed.
  5. Select the plug-in version from the Available Version drop-down menu that is supported on the installed version of OpenManage Enterprise. Review the list of prerequisites.
  6. Click Download the plug-in. The plug-in is downloaded, and the status of the plug-in is updated to Downloaded on the Console and Plugins page.
  7. In the Install Details page, click Install plug-in.
  8. Review the agreement and then click the Accept option.
  9. The details of the number of users who are logged in to OpenManage Enterprise, tasks in progress, and scheduled jobs are displayed in the confirmation window. To confirm the installation, select the "I agree that I have captured a snapshot of the OpenManage Enterprise appliance before performing a plug-in action" option, and then click Confirm Install.
  • To instantly view the latest list of devices and groups that are part of Power Manager as a result of any license changes made on the target devices, click Run Inventory in OpenManage Enterprise, and then click the Refresh Power Manager capabilities option on the Power Manager Devices page.
  • View the count of overall power-capable devices from the Power Manager Devices Statistics section of the OpenManage Enterprise dashboard.
Ensure use of OpenManage Enterprise version 4.0 or newer.
To upgrade Power Manager, perform the following steps:
  1. Launch OpenManage Enterprise, and click Application Settings > Console and Plugins. The Console and Plugins tab is displayed.
  2. In the Power Manager section, click Update Available. The Update Plugin page is displayed.
  3. To view the updates for this version, click the Release Notes link. The support page is displayed.
  4. To download the update, click Download Plugin. The Enabled plug-in during update option is selected by default. If you want to disable the plug-in post upgrade, clear the Enabled plug-in during update option. The plug-in is downloaded, and the status of the download is displayed on a green color band.
  5. To update Power Manager, click Update Plugin.
  6. In the End User License Agreement window, review and click the Accept option.
  7. The details of the number of users who are logged in to OpenManage Enterprise, tasks in progress, and scheduled jobs are displayed in the confirmation window. To confirm the installation, select the "I agree that I have captured a snapshot of the OpenManage Enterprise appliance before performing a plug-in action" option, and then click Confirm Install.
To view the list of devices and groups that are Redfish capable, click Run Inventory in OpenManage Enterprise, and then click the Refresh Power Manager capabilities option on the Power Manager Devices page.
