Instructions

Operating system change requires TPM Upgrade or Downgrade

Select Dell systems require a matching TPM upgrade or downgrade if the operating system is upgraded or downgraded between Windows 10.

  • Legacy Boot Mode systems require TPM 1.2.
  • UEFI Mode systems work with both TPM 2.0 and 1.2.

For more Information on how to switch the TPM Version, refer to the article How to troubleshoot and resolve common issues with TPM and BitLocker.

NOTE: *In order to upgrade to TPM 2.0, if you operate these specific Precision systems need to update BIOS to the latest version A14 (as of 15 August 2016) and apply the TPM firmware patch or update 1.3.0.1.

NOTE: This does not apply to the Dell Precision Rack R7910/7910XL. These are Enterprise class systems and the TPM module is a point of sale configuration that is embedded in the system board and is not field upgradable.

How to update the TPM

NOTE: Ensure that the system has AC adapter plugged into the system when performing this task. Any power disruption that occurs may cause damage to TPM module during upgrade/downgrade. When this occurs end user will not have access to data in hard drive and system will not be usable.

Systems that shipped with Windows 10 from the factory will have TPM 2.0. These systems will need the Dell TPM 1.2 Update Utility from the Dell Support Website to downgrade the TPM to firmware version 1.2.
Drivers and downloads > Category: Security > Dell TPM 1.2 Firmware Update Utility

The installation instructions for each update utility are listed in the Installation Instructions section near the bottom of the download page.

NOTE: You will need to provide a bootable DOS USB key. This executable file does not create the DOS system files.

NOTE: If BitLocker is enabled on your system, please make sure you suspend BitLocker encryption before updating TPM on a BitLocker enabled system.

NOTE: On systems with DDPE installed:
  1. Open the Services Desktop App (Type services.msc in the search box, then press the Enter key)
  2. Set the DellMgmtAgent Windows service to Disabled
  3. Stop the DellMgmtAgent Windows service
  4. Set the DellMgmtLoader Windows service to Disabled
  5. Stop the DellMgmtLoader Windows service
  6. Proceed with clearing the TPM
  7. After Clearing TPM
  8. Set the DellMgmtLoader Windows service to Automatic
  9. Start the DellMgmtLoader Windows service
  10. Set the DellMgmtAgent Windows service to Automatic
  11. Start the DellMgmtAgent Windows service

NOTE: The TPM must be ON and Enabled in BIOS Setup, and the TPM must not be owned. If the TPM is owned, go to BIOS Setup and clear the TPM before proceeding. You may need to run TPM.msc to re-initial the TPM under Windows OS.

NOTE: When the TPM ownership is cleared, some operating system will automatically take ownership of the TPM on the next boot (TPM AutoProvisioning). This feature will need to be disabled in the OS to proceed with the update.
