If the user of the computer has configured eSIM, a new device is being falsely detected as a smart card device by Windows. The new device that is detected has a driver that is installed automatically. This driver is shown as Uicc Iso Device in Device Manager.
This device is now enabled as a smart card device in Windows. Users are unable to select the permanently used smart card device for log-in.
Windows automatically selects the active smart card device depending on the order that devices are initialized while turning on the computer. This can cause situations where the wrong smart card device is selected automatically and the login attempt with a PIN fails on the first try. The smart card device then switches automatically again so that the login attempt is successful on the second try.
This issue affects users with eSim enabled WWAN cards.
Windows 10 (version 1703 and later) and Windows 11 (version 21H2 and later) operating system handling of the eSIM hardware causes this issue.
This is working according to Microsoft’s design, impacting WWAN cards that support eSIM hardware. The Uicc Iso Device may be disabled from Device Manager.
