Windows 10: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 / 1660 Ti graphics driver doesn't update

Symptom

If you use a Dell PC with either a GeForce GTX 1660 or GTX 1660 Ti video card installed, you might be unable to update the Nvidia graphics driver to the latest version and get an error message stating Nvidia installer cannot continue.

Affected systems

• Windows 10 Dell PC's that shipped with either an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 or GTX 1660 Ti graphics card

Solution

Dell always recommends that your system, software and drivers are always kept to the most recent version available. The following steps will take you through the update process:

1. Install the latest Nvidia graphics driver from the Dell support site (Enter your service tag to ensure the best driver match to your system as it shipped from Dell.):

   1. Browse to the Dell Drivers & Downloads page:

      • Support site drivers page

   2. Ensure that you have the correct System Type

   3. Select the Operating System

   4. Under Category, select Video

   5. Locate the latest NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Driver

   6. Click Download and save the file to your computer

   7. Open File Explorer and browse to the location where the downloaded file is saved

   8. Double-click the setup file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation process

2. Restart your system and go to the following article to identify whether your driver type is Standard or DCH:

   • Windows 10: NVIDIA Installer reports "cannot continue" error

3. Use the following GeForce link to identify and download the latest driver for your card (based on the information you got from the previous step.):

   • GeForce Driver Support 

4. Run the downloaded installer as an administrator (this will require you to have admin access to your system.). Once it fails, do not close the window with the installation error message:

   1. Open Device Manager

   2. Expand Display Adapters and Right-click on the Nvidia GPU

   3. Click on Update Driver

   4. Click on Browse to locate the downloaded file

   5. Click on Let Me Pick

   6. Click on Have Disk and then click on Browse

   7. Go to the following location and swap out xxx.yy for the driver version number you want to install:

      C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.yy\Win10_64\International\Display.Driver

   8. Select the first file in the displayed list

   9. Wait for the drivers to load

   10. Select the one that corresponds to your video card

       The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti for example

   11. Click on Next

   12. Once the installation is completed, restart the system

   13. Confirm that the driver version has changed
