A Reference Guide to Inspiron Laptop Diagnostic Indicators

Summary: This article is a reference guide to the diagnostic codes available on each model of Inspiron laptops and what those codes actually indicate.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Instructions

Dell Inspiron laptops have built in diagnostic indicators such as beep codes or LED codes that are helpful to diagnose and resolve issues that your laptop might experience during startup. These can be audible beeps, power buttons that display different states and colours, specific diagnostics LEDs or a combination of them all, indicate at which point during the Power On Self-Test (POST) a laptop is having issues.

The following article is a reference guide to the codes available on Inspiron laptops and what those codes actually mean. The diagnostic indicators may vary across different models, see the documentation of your Dell laptop for device-specific information. These indicators are merely a starting point to find troubleshooting steps to resolve startup issues.

Table of Contents:

  1. Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron Laptop Series (2020 to Present)
  2. Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron Laptop Series (2016 to 2020)
  3. Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron Laptop Series (2006 to 2016)
  4. Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron Laptop Series (Prior to 2006)
  5. Inspiron Laptop Audible Beep Codes
  6. Glossary of Acronyms
  7. Diagnostic Indicator Guides
Note: The diagnostic LEDs in the tables below serve as an indicator of the progress through the POST process. These LEDs do not indicate the problem that caused the POST failure.
Note: If the laptop completes POST without stopping at a particular error code and then displays a black screen, the most likely reason is that laptop is unable to boot to the operating system and not related to the POST issue.

Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron Laptops (2020 to Present)

With the latest series, the power or battery LED state now gives an increased number of blinks and colour shift pattern to indicate where it's had a problem.

Note: The blinking patterns consist of two sets of numbers. These are represented by first group (amber blinks), second group (white blinks).
  • First group: The battery LED blinks in amber up to nine times and then pauses for 1.5 seconds before running the second group.
  • Second group: The battery LED blinks in white up to nine times and then pauses for 3 seconds before running the first group again.

For example, No Memory detected (2, 3), the battery LED blinks two times in amber followed by a pause, and then blinks three times in white, pause, and so on. This pattern continues until the system is turned off.

Diagnostic LEDs for the Inspiron laptop series (2016 to 2020)

With this series, the diagnostics indicator Beeps were mostly removed. Instead the Power Button state gives a blink and colour shift pattern to indicate where it's had a problem.

Inspiron laptop audible beep codes

In addition to the various types of diagnostics LEDs, there are several audible beep codes across the models of these systems.

These codes are recognised across manufacturers and have remained the same for some time.

The key to these codes is displayed in the table below.
