PowerEdge: How To Update Firmware From The LifeCycle Controller

Summary: This article provides information about how to update your system's firmware from the Lifecycle Controller on Dell servers.

This article applies to This article does not apply to This article is not tied to any specific product. Not all product versions are identified in this article.

Instructions

Note: This article is part of the Server Tutorials: The update is available at PowerEdge: What are The Ways and How To Update The Firmware and Drivers?

Firmware for your system is available for downloading on Dell Support. To enter the Lifecycle Controller, press <F10> during boot, and ensure that a network connection is set up before you start the updates.

Note: Need help with identifying which generation server you have? See article Dell PowerEdge servers by generation.

To set up the Network, go to Settings from the main menu, and then select Network settings. This must be set to valid details for your network.

Note: Any network settings in the Lifecycle Controller do not affect the normal Operating system once you have booted back to it.

Note: All Enterprise Systems Management software is migrated to consume catalog files and Dell Update Packages from downloads.dell.com explicitly through https protocol. downloads.dell.com repository site is restricted to https protocols, and does not support ftp/http protocols for access. Dell Technologies recommends that users should begin leveraging the https protocol from the online repository at downloads.dell.com.

Warning: FTP option is only used for any local FTP server that the updates would reside on.

Updating PowerEdge Servers Via the LifeCycle Controller

  1. Start the Lifecycle Controller by pressing <F10> at system start.

  2. In the left pane, click Firmware Update.

  3. In the right pane, click Launch Firmware Update.

  4. Select any of these update repositories: Dell Website, Network Share (CIFS, NFS, or HTTP), or FTP Server, Local Drive (CD, DVD, or USB), and click Next. The Enter Access Details page is displayed.

Note: To use the online Dell catalog (first Update your iDRAC to the latest version)
  • For Dell Website
  • For HTTPS, select Network Share -> HTTPS and enter downloads.dell.com in the Share Name/Address field. Then enter catalog in the File Path or Update package path to download the latest update catalog.
  • For FTP Server, enter your own local FTP server address followed by any credentials if any required. You can verify the connection by clicking Test Network Connection. If the domain name is provided, then the server IP address and the domain name are displayed. If a proxy IP is provided, then the proxy IP along with the server IP is displayed

  1. Type or select the appropriate data.

  2. Click Next. The Select Updates page is displayed with the catalog file, catalog version, and component names for which the updates are available.

  3. Select the components that require an update, and then click Apply. The update process is initiated, and the firmware update is completed. After a restart, the system is ready to use.

Using Dell Repository Manager (DRM) to create a firmware/ driver repository.

You can use the DRM to create a repository with a selection of needed firmware or driver updates for your Dell server.

The repository can then be used in the lifecycle controller to update the server.
