Symptoms

Only two External Monitors were detected when connected through WD19 dock on Ubuntu.

 

Latitude 9420 laptop owners using the Ubuntu 20.04 operating system may see the following issue when connecting multiple external monitors:

  • The laptop does not detect all the external monitors that are connected.

This happens under the following conditions:

  • You are configuring three or more Quad High-Definition (QHD) external monitors.
  • You are configuring three or more Full High-Definition (FHD) external monitors.
  • You are configuring three or more High-Definition (HD) external monitors.
  • They are connected through a Dell WD19 series Docking station.
  • The laptop was purchased with the Dell Ubuntu 20.04 Operating system installed.

Cause

The Dell OEM Ubuntu 20.04 image only supports up to two external monitors over the WD19 docking station series.

Resolution

Note: This is the expected behavior for this version of the Ubuntu operating system.

Only connect two external screens to this laptop through the docking station when using the Dell Ubuntu 20.04 image.
