Although a regular Avamar client can back up data from mapped CIFS drives and exported NFS mounts, this functionality is not officially supported.
Dell Support does not assist with configuring or troubleshooting issues relating to the backup or restoration of such data.
Common problems related to backing up CIFS, NFS, and SMB shares include,
but are not restricted to the following:-
- If Windows data is backed up using a UNIX Avamar client, it loses the Windows Access Control Lists (ACLs). Conversely, if UNIX data is backed up using a Windows client, it loses the UNIX ACLs.
- Backup performance may be poor.
- Customers may experience third-party issues,
- Customers may experience issues caused by CIFS version interoperability.
- There is no facility to perform VSS-like snapshots of data located across a mapped CIFS or NFS share. Open files may not be backed up consistently.
Storage devices such as NAS filers should be backed up using an Avamar Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) accelerator.
The Avamar NDMP accelerator node is a dedicated Avamar client. It runs the regular Avamar Linux client software and the Avamar NDMP plug-in to back up data from supported filers using the NDMP protocol.
Information on NDMP accelerator functionality is available in the Avamar NDMP accelerator guide or can contact EMC Account Manager.
If the system exporting the data using CIFS or NFS has an Operating System that Avamar supports, install a client on it and collect files directly.
When possible the server that is hosting the CIFS, NFS, or SMB shares should be backed up directly with a client installed on the file system.
Workaround:
Step one:
The customer must agree and respond with an email that they accept and fully understand support is limited and agree to the following conditions.
The customer has read and fully understands the below limitations.

Confirm that the email shows up on the case before proceeding.
Step two:
The customer must select or create an account that has full admin (domain admin) privilege on the source of the share.
Step three:
On the client used to perform the backup, set the "Backup Agent" service to log in as the account in step two.
Step four:
For backup, define a specific dataset and specify the path of the share using UNC format.
In the "Source Data" tab, of the plug-in options:
DO NOT include all local Windows file systems or select All local Windows file system. All local Windows file system is selected by default. This backs up all file system data.
The customer must limit the dataset to specific items, and perform the following steps:
a. In the File or Folder Path, type the path as an example: \\server\share\folder
b. Click ADD.
For Restore, the destination folder must be specified as an example: \\server\share\folder
