NVP vProxy: VM shutdown occurs when performing a Virtual Disk Recovery

Summary: NetWorker VMware Protection (NVP) vProxy VMDK (Disk) restore shuts down a Virtual Machine (VM) as part of the restore.

Symptoms

The NetWorker VMware Protection integration is configured with the vProxy Appliance. The virtual disk recovery is configured in the NetWorker Management Console (NMC) to an existing virtual machine (VM). A virtual disk recovery to a powered on VM causes the guest OS to shut down. The vSphere web client shows the event 'Initiate Guest OS Shutdown' requested by the account used in the NetWorker VMware View (NSR Hypervisor) configuration. The VM cannot be powered on until the restore completes.

Cause

The Guest OS shutdown is by design in the virtual disk recovery workflow. The behavior is indicated in the "Virtual disk recovery" section in the Dell NetWorker VMware Integration Guide. https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/product/networker/docs

Warning from VMware Integration Guide

The NetWorker Management Console's (NMC) recover wizard provides the following warning prompt before proceeding with the restore:

NMC warning that VM will be powered off during restore

Resolution

The Virtual disk recovery configuration has an option "Power on VM," which will automatically "power on" the VM after the virtual disk recovery.

Workaround:

The Virtual disk recovery can be performed to another "temporary" VM if the original VM cannot be shut down during the restore. After the restore completes, detach the disk from the "temporary" VM and mount it on the wanted VM using VMware's "Add Existing Hard Disk" option.
Add existing hard disk
