To enter Service Mode, hold down the B key on the keyboard and press the power button for 3 seconds or until the Dell Logo appears on the screen.
After the ready-to-proceed message appears on the screen, press any key to proceed. The computer emits three short beeps and shuts down immediately.
To begin, loosen the two captive screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly Then, remove the seven screws that secure the base cover to the assembly.
Using a plastic scribe, pry the base cover from the top left at the hinge, and then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover. Lift the base cover off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Note that the steps that follow are only applicable to the left fan for both two fans and three fans configurations. The steps for this procedure will differ depending on the configuration of your computer.
To remove the left fan, lift the corner of the Mylar covering the system board. Disconnect the left-fan cable from the system board For two fans configuration, Remove the two screws that secure the left fan to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Lift the left fan off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. For three fan configurations, Remove the five screws that secure the left fans to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Lift the left fan at an angle till the left fan disengages from the slot on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Slide and lift the left fan off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
You have successfully removed the left fan. Now, let's install the left fan. Place the left fan on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and align the screw holes on the left fan with the screw holes on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Replace the five screws that secure the left fans to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Connect the left-fan cable to the system board. For two fan configuration, Replace the two screws that secure the left fan to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Re-install the base cover by aligning and placing the base cover on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly press the edges and sides of the base cover until it snaps into place.
Tighten the two captive screws that secure the base cover to palm rest and keyboard assembly. then, replace the seven screws that secure the base cover to the assembly.
