Learn how to replace the keyboard on a Dell notebook. Use this video if your notebook does not have a trim piece surrounding the keyboard. This is valid for most Inspiron notebooks. Replacing the keyboard in a Dell notebook is a relatively simple procedure. It should take about 20 minutes to complete. Before you begin, we recommend you take a few minutes to prepare.
First, review the video, "Learn how to avoid ESD damage", for simple precautions to avoid static damage to your components. Second, save and review your product manual on dell.com/manuals. This video provides a general overview, but some systems may have slight differences.
If you encounter any issues, refer to your manual. A plastic scribe, or other non-marring tool, may be useful. To begin, remove any external cables including the AC adapter. Remove the battery.
Open the display as far as possible. Using a plastic scribe, release the tabs securing the keyboard to the palmrest. Lift and slide the keyboard toward the display.
Turn the keyboard over, and place it on the palmrest. Lift the connector latch and disconnect the keyboard cable. Remove the keyboard and set it aside. Place the new keyboard on the palmrest and reconnect the keyboard, press down on the connector latch to secure it.
Turn the keyboard over, and slide the bottom of the keyboard in to the slots on the palmrest. Press gently around the edges of the keyboard to secure it. Replace the battery, and reconnect any external cables.
