This video provides a detailed guide on how to replace the SSD on an Inspiron 16 5640. It covers everything from entering Service Mode and removing the base cover to safely installing the new SSD and reassembling the laptop.
In this video, we demonstrate how to replace the solid-state drive (SSD) on an Inspiron 16 5640. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Always use ESD protection when working inside the computer, and disconnect all attached peripherals. To enter Service Mode, press and hold the B key on the keyboard, then press the power button. The computer will boot up, displaying the Owner Tag information. Press any key to proceed, and the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down.
To begin, loosen the two captive screws and remove the six screws securing the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Use a plastic scribe to open the base cover, starting from the recesses near the hinges, and continue prying along the sides to release and remove it. Remove the screw securing the SSD bracket to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly, then slide and remove the SSD bracket along with the SSD from its slot on the system board. Turn the SSD bracket over, remove the screw securing the SSD to the bracket, and lift the SSD off the bracket.
To install the SSD, align the round notch on the SSD with the screw hole on the SSD bracket, replace the screw, and secure the SSD to the bracket. Turn the SSD bracket over, align the notch of the SSD with the tab of its slot on the system board, and slide it in at an angle. Replace the screw securing the SSD bracket to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Align the base cover with the palm-rest and keyboard assembly and snap it into place. Tighten the two captive screws and replace the six screws securing the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Once the computer is fully assembled, connect the power adapter, press the power button to turn on the computer, and exit Service Mode. Note that the computer will only power on if the power adapter is connected. For more information about the Inspiron 16 5640, visit Dell.com/Support.
