In this video, we demonstrate how to replace an M.2 2230 or 2280 SSD on an OptiPlex All-in-One 7420 with a High Performance processor. To begin, turn off your computer and disconnect all peripherals. Determine if your computer has a High Performance processor by checking that there is a power supply connector on the back panel.
Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Place your computer display down on a clean and flat surface. Press and hold the securing tab, then lift and slide the stand off the computer. Press down on the securing tab and lift to remove the back cover.
Next, remove the six screws that secure the system board shield to your computer. With two hands, lift the system board shield off your computer. Now, locate the SSD installed on the system board. There may be up to two SSDs installed on your system board. The procedure to removal and install the SSD in each slot is exactly the same.
Remove the screw that secures the SSD in the system board. Then, slide and lift the SSD from the system board. Before installing the new SSD, check if the screw mount is on the correct location for the form factor of your new SSD. To change the location of the screw mount, remove the screw mount from one location and move it to the other.
Now, let’s install the new SSD. First, align the notch on the SSD with the tab on the M.2 slot, then slide the SSD in. Install the screw that secures it to the system board. Take the system board shield and place it over the system board and install the six screws that secure it to your computer.
Place and align the back cover on your computer before sliding it into place. Align the tabs on the stand with the slots on the back cover. Then, slide the stand into place. Finally, lift the computer and place it upright.
