This video shows how to replace the M.2 2230 solid-state drive or SSD in an Inspiron 16 Plus 7640. Before you begin, create a recovery drive and back up all data. Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. Disconnect all the attached peripherals. Then enter Service Mode by pressing and holding the B key and then press the power button. Now, the computer will boot up and the Owner Tag information is displayed.
Press any key to proceed, the computer will emit three short beeps and shut down. To begin, loosen the two captive screws. Then remove the seven screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Using a plastic scribe, pry the base cover from the top left at the hinge and then continue to work on the sides to open the base cover. Lift the base cover off the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. Remove the screw that secures the SSD and the thermal shield to the system board. Lift the thermal shield at an angle and remove the drive from the SSD slot.
Turn and place it on a dry and flat surface. Remove the screw that secures the SSD to the thermal shield. Remove the drive from the shield. To install the M.2 2230 SSD, align the screw hole on the SSD with the screw hole on the thermal shield. Replace the screw to secure the shield to the SSD.
Turn over the thermal shield and locate the notch on the SSD. Align the notch on the SSD with the tab on the slot and slide it in. Replace the screw to secure the thermal shield to the system board. Place and snap the base cover on the palm-rest and keyboard assembly.
Tighten the two captive screws and then replace the seven screws to secure the base cover to the palm-rest and keyboard assembly. With the computer assembled, connect the power adapter. Press the power button to power on the computer to exit from Service Mode. Please note: The computer will only turn on if the power adapter is connected.
