How to create a Protection Policy in PowerProtect Data Manager using the GUI

This video will demonstrate the how to create Protection Policies in the PPDM graphical user interface (GUI). For more Information, check the PowerProtect Data Manager Administration Guide.

Protection policies define sets of objectives that apply to specific periods of time. Each policy type has its own set of user objectives. In this video, you will learn how to setup these policies in the PPDM User Interface.

To avoid high CPU usage that can lead to failure issues, do not schedule backups more often than recommended. From the Dashboard select Protection and then Protection Policies. Click the Add button to begin the policy creation process. Name your new policy, add an optional description if needed and select the Type of backup that the policy will perform.

Then select Next. Review the 3 available purposes and select the one that meets your needs. Click next to continue. Select the Assets to be included in the policy and click Next. In the Objectives screen you can select the Storage device, backup frequency, backup retention and other options for your policy.

Refer to the administration guide for full details about these options. You can find the link in the video description. Select your choices and save them, then select next. The final configuration page is Options. Here you can configure the backup Optimization type, Exclusion of swap files, indexing, quiescing and the protection mechanism. Refer to the admin guide for full details about these options.

Select your choices and click next. Review the summary page and click Finish. Your new policy will be visible under Protection and Protection Policies Navigate to Jobs and System Jobs. Here you will see the configuration tasks.

Once these jobs have completed, navigate back to Protection and Protection Policies to run the Policy manually to test it. Alternatively, you can wait for the next scheduled run. To run the policy manually, select the Policy and click Protect Now. Select All Assets or Customize your choice, then click Next.

You can leave the configuration as it is and click Next. At the summary screen click Protect Now to start the process. Navigate to Jobs, then Protection Jobs to see the progress of the task you just started.
