Replacing the optical drive in a your Dell desktop is simple procedure. It should take about 20 minutes to complete. Before you begin we recommend you take a few minutes to prepare: Watch the video, "Learn how to avoid ESD damage", for simple precautions to avoid static damage to your components Download your product manual from dell.com/manuals.
This video provides a general overview, but some systems may have slight differences. If you encounter any issues, refer to your manual. Depending on your system model, you may need a phillips head screwdriver. Remove any optical media from the drive to be replaced.
If you're unable to remove media, watch our video "How to open a disk from a jammed optical drive". Power down your system, then disconnect all data and power cables. Remove the system cover or side panel. Depending on your model, slide the retaining latch or Remove the thumbscrew to release the side panel. If you experience issues, refer to your manual. Locate the drive in the system, and remove the data and power cables.
Grasp the plugs and gently work the plugs free. Release the retention clip and lift the optical drive. Insert the new drive until the securing latch clicks. Connect the data and power cables to the drive. Replace the side panel, securing the thumbscrew if present. Reconnect the power and peripheral cables to your system.
