Welcome to the Dell Data Protection: Encryption client installation demo. In this video, we will cover the information you will need before you begin, Your options for installing the client, confirming that the client is active, And finally, how to upgrade. Before you begin, make sure you have administrator authority For the machine on which you will be installing the client.
For the next three items, in most cases, the information is identical: The name of the machine that will host the DDPE client. If you are performing a distributed installation, and are unsure how to proceed, You may want to consult your Dell Support Team. Let’s get started. When installing DDPE, you have a choice of interactive or command line methods.
For now, let’s focus on the interactive method. Simply click on setup.exe. From there, a series of separate prompts will get you going. After confirming that you want to run as a local administrator And accepting the licensing agreements, You will be asked where on the machine you would like the software to reside. We generally recommend the default location, But you can select a different destination simply by clicking the Change button.
Next, you will be prompted to decide between a locally managed or remotely managed console. Because we are discussing the Enterprise edition of Dell Data Protection Encryption, Go ahead and select the Remotely Managed option. Lastly, on this screen you have the ability to choose External Media only. Keep in mind that if you select this option, the client will not encrypt internal drives, But rather protect only removable media.
After selecting a remotely managed client, You will be prompted to provide the information we displayed at the beginning of this video: Server name, client domain name, Policy proxy, the port of the policy proxy, And finally, the device server URL. Once these fields have been entered, click on the Install button. After the software is installed, reboot your machine to enable Windows password protection.
After rebooting, you can double-check that the client has been activated. Simply click the Systray icon and select Open Dell Data Protection. The console should display confirmation that encryption is in progress. To view policies received by the client, click on the Advanced tab. The process of upgrading a client is very similar to the original installation. You will need to have the same information as before, And once again, you can choose between an interactive and a command line installation. Let’s see what a command line process looks like.
In your file, be sure to reference setup.exe. In this example, /s indicates silent mode, And /v specifies the location of the server, the device server URL, and the policy proxy. For more details on setting up command line parameters, please see the administrator’s guide.
Now, simply run the batch file and reboot the machine to complete the upgrade. That covers installing and upgrading the DDPE client.
