Dell QuickTips. Reset and Drain Power PowerEdge Server. When facing a hardware issue, the first thing to try is to reset the server in order to restart them.
This video explains the difference between a reset and a hard reset. The first method is restart, which is just using the normal procedure to restart your machine.
The second method is reset. If the device is not responding to any command, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. Power is cut and the device will restart.
The third method is the hard reset. As some components are still powered and do not reboot when you reset, for example, the iDRAC, it is advised to perform a hard reset.
To do this, power the server down, disconnect the server from all power cables and network cables, hold down the power button continuously for at least 10 seconds, reinsert the power cables and network cables back into the system.
Wait about 2 minutes before powering on this server to give the iDRAC time to initialize, and then power the system back on. And that's it.
