This video shows how to remove and install the secondary M.2 2280 SSD on the Precision 7560 and Precision 7760 without SSD door configuration.
Note: For computers shipped with M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 SSD installed in slot 0. This slot supports only M.2 2280 PCIe Gen4 Solid-state drive and does not support any Optane, SATA, or M.2 2230 Solid-state drive.
Before you begin, ensure that you create a recovery drive and back up all data. Turn off your computer and disconnect all attached peripherals and if present remove the SD card.
Ensure that you always use ESD protection when working inside the computer. To begin, loosen the eight captive screws that secure the base cover to the computer.
For computers shipped without a SmartCard reader, pry open the base cover starting from the recess at the bottom edge of the cover. For models shipped with SmartCard reader, pry open the base cover from the SmartCard reader slot at the bottom right side of the base cover.
Use your fingers to pry open the base cover as the use of plastic scribe or any other sharp objects may damage the base cover. Lift the base cover starting from the bottom edge and push it towards the rear to remove it from the computer. Note: Do not lift the base cover directly upwards to remove, as this may damage the rear edge of the cover.
After removing the base cover, if any of the thermal pads for the M.2 SSD, WWAN card, and/or inner frame are detached, adhere them to their correct slot on the computer. Disconnect the battery cable.
Now let’s remove the secondary M.2-2280 solid-state drive. Remove the screw that secures the M.2 SSD module into its slot on the computer.
Slide the SSD release latch to unlock the SSD module and remove the M.2 SSD module from the computer. Remove the screw that secures the M.2 SSD thermal plate to the SSD carrier.
Now carefully tilt at an angle and then slide to remove the M.2 SSD thermal plate from the M.2 SSD module. Now remove the solid-state drive from the SSD carrier.
You have successfully removed the secondary M.2 2280 solid-state drive. Now, let’s install the secondary M.2 2280 solid-state drive. To begin, place the M.2 2280 SSD onto its slot on the SSD carrier.
Align the tabs on the M.2 SSD thermal plate with the tab holes on the SSD carrier at an angle and place the M.2 SSD thermal plate above the M.2 SSD module.
Now replace the screw to secure the M.2 SSD thermal plate to the M.2 SSD module. Replace the M.2 SSD module in its slot on the computer Now slide the SSD release latch to lock the M.2 SSD module in place.
Then replace the screw to secure the M.2 SSD module in place. Note: Carefully align the tab hole on the thermal plate near the screw hole with the tab on the SSD carrier.
Connect the battery cable to the connector on the system board. Re-install the base cover by aligning and placing the base cover on the computer.
Align the screw holes on the base cover with the screw holes on the computer chassis, and then snap the base cover into place. Now tighten the eight captive screws to secure the base cover to the computer.
If present, insert the SD card into the SD card slot. You can now connect all the peripherals. For more information or support about Precision 7560 and 7760 systems, visit Dell.com/Support.
