In this video, we demonstrate how to remove and install the 2.5-inch hard drive. Before removing the 2.5-inch hard drive read through the safety guidelines to protect your computer from potential damage and ensure your personal safety.
For more information about safety guidelines see the XPS 8940 Service Manual at dell.com/support. Before you begin, turn off your computer and disconnect all attached peripherals.
Before we remove the 2.5-inch hard drive we need to remove the left-side cover. To remove the left-side cover loosen the two captive screws that secure the left-side cover to the chassis.
Using the tab on the left-side cover slide and lift the left-side cover off the chassis. Now, let’s remove the 2.5-inch hard drive. Lay the computer on the right side.
Disconnect the data and power cables from the hard drive. Press the release tabs on the hard-drive carrier and slide the hard-drive carrier out of the hard-drive cage.
Pry the hard-drive carrier to release the tabs on the carrier from the slots on the hard drive and lift the hard drive off the hard-drive carrier. You’ve successfully removed the 2.5-inch hard drive. Now, let’s see how to install the 2.5-inch hard drive.
Place the hard drive into the hard-drive carrier and align the tabs on the carrier with the slots on the hard drive. Snap the hard-drive carrier into the hard drive then slide the hard-drive assembly into the hard-drive cage until it snaps into place and connect the data cable and power cable to the hard drive.
Once the 2.5-inch hard drive is installed, install the left-side cover. To install the left-side cover align the tabs on the left-side cover with the slots on the chassis and slide it towards the front of the computer.
Then tighten the two captive screws that secure the left-side cover to the chassis. The 2.5-inch hard drive installation process is now complete.
