Prerequisites
Save and close all open files and exit all open applications.
Shut down your computer. For Windows operating system, click Start > Image: Power button Power > Shut down.
NOTE:If you are using a different operating system, see the documentation of your operating system for shut-down instructions.
Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
Disconnect all attached network devices and peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse, and monitor from your computer.
CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.
Remove any media card and optical disc from your computer, if applicable.
Removing the side cover:
Loosen the two captive screws that secure the side cover to the chassis.
Slide the side cover towards the back of the computer.
Lift the side cover from the chassis.
Removing the 2.5-inch hard drive:
Disconnect the data and power cables from the hard drive.
Remove the screw (#6-32) that secures the hard drive carrier to the chassis.
Remove the four screws (M3x3.5) that secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier.
Slide and lift the 2.5-inch hard drive off the hard-drive carrier.
NOTE: Note the orientation or the SATA connector marking on the hard-drive carrier so that you can replace it correctly.
Removing the 3.5-inch hard drive:
Disconnect the data and power cables from the hard drive.
Remove the two screws (6-32) that secure the hard-drive carrier to the chassis.
Slide the hard-drive carrier away from the chassis and lift hard-drive carrier out of the disk-drive cage.
Remove the two screws (6-32) that secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier.
Slide and remove the hard drive from the hard-drive carrier.
Removing the disk-drive cage:
If the optical drive is installed, remove the data and power cables from the routing points on the disk-drive cage.
Remove the single (6-32) screw to release the disk-drive cage from the chassis..
Lift the disk-drive and detach it from the mounting points on the chassis.
Rotate the drive-cage and place it on the chassis.
If the optical drive is installed, disconnect the power and data cables from the connectors on the optical drive.
Lift the disk-drive cage away from the computer.
Removing the memory:
Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing-clips on each end of the memory-module slot.
Grasp the memory module near the securing clip, and then gently ease the memory module out of the memory-module slot.
CAUTION:To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges. Do not touch the components or metallic contacts on the memory module as electrostatic discharge (ESD) can inflict severe damage on the components. To read more about ESD protection, see ESD protection.
NOTE:Repeat step 1 to step 2 to remove any other memory modules installed in your computer.
NOTE:Note the slot and the orientation of the memory module in order to replace it in the correct slot.
NOTE:If the memory module is difficult to remove, gently ease the memory module back and forth to remove it from the slot.
Installing the memory:
Ensure that the securing clips are in an open position.
Align the notch on the memory module with the tab on the memory-module slot.
Press down on the memory module until the memory module snaps into position and the securing clip locks in place.
CAUTION:To prevent damage to the memory module, hold the memory module by the edges. Do not touch the components or metallic contacts on the memory module as electrostatic discharge (ESD) can inflict severe damage on the components. To read more about ESD protection, see ESD protection.
NOTE:Repeat step 1 to step 3 to install more than one memory module in your computer.
Installing the disk-drive cage:
Place the disk-drive cage upside down on the chassis.
If the optical drive is installed, connect the data and power cable to the connectors on the optical drive.
Hold the disk-drive cage upright and align the mounting points on the disk-drive cage with the slots on the chassis.
Align the screw hole on the cage with the screw hole on the chassis.
Install the single (6-32) screw to secure the disk-drive cage in place.
If the optical drive is installed, route the power and data cables through the routing guide on the disk-drive cage.
Installing the 3.5-inch hard drive:
Slide the hard drive into the hard-drive carrier.
Replace the two screws (6-32) to secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier.
Align the tabs on the hard-drive carrier with the slots on the chassis and snap the hard-drive carrier onto the disk-drive cage.
Replace the two screws (6-32) to secure the hard drive carrier on the chassis.
Connect the data and power cables to the connectors on the hard drive.
Installing the 2.5-inch hard drive:
Insert and align the hard drive into the hard-drive carrier.
Replace the four screws (M3x3) that secure the hard drive to the hard-drive carrier.
Align the tabs on the hard-drive carrier with the slots on the chassis and snap the hard-drive carrier into place.
Replace the screw (#6-32) to secure the hard-drive carrier to the chassis.
Connect the data and power cables to the connectors on the hard drive.
Installing the front bezel:
Align the front-cover tabs with the slots on the chassis.
Rotate the front cover towards the chassis and snap it into place.
Installing the side cover:
Align the tabs on the side cover with the slots on the chassis.
Slide the side cover towards the front of the computer.
Tighten the two captive screws to secure the side cover to the chassis.
Replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside your computer.
