Replacing the optical drive in a Dell desktop is a relatively simple procedure. It should take about 20 minutes to complete before you begin. We recommend you take a few minutes to prepare.

This video provides a general overview but some systems may have slight differences if you encounter any issues. Refer to your manual, depending on your system model, you may need a Phillips head screwdriver, remove any optical media from the drive to be replaced.
If you're unable to remove media, watch our video, how to open a disk from a jammed optical drive, power down your system, then disconnect all data and power cables, remove the system cover or side panel or remove the thumbscrew.
If you experience issues, refer to your manual, locate the drive to be replaced and remove the data and power cables, grasp the plugs and gently work the plugs free slide, the optical drive latch, then push the drive from the back toward the front of the system. If the drive does not slide out easily.
The front bezel will need to be removed, press the bezel tabs in, firmly, remove the basil, then slide the drive out, insert the new drive until the securing lage clicks replace the bezel by aligning the tabs on one side and rotating in until it clicks into place.
Connect the data and power cables to the drive, replace the side panel, securing the thumbscrew if present, reconnect all data and power cables to your system. Restart your computer, your new drive should automatically be identified. Congratulations on successfully replacing your optical drive.
