NetWorker: NVP-vProxy Plugin Installation & Troubleshooting //www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/36141 Today we will talk about a NetWorker vProxy plug-in for vCenter which allows users to perform backup and restore by vSphere web client without access to NetWorker NMC console.
First of all, to install this vCenter plugin, we will need to log into the NMC and click on the protection tab on the left-hand side. Right-click on the vCenter link you want to install the plugin for and choose ‘Install vCenter Plugin’. In the popup window, go ahead and click on ‘Install’ to start the installation.
You’ll be confirmed that the installation has completed successfully in the windows below. Once the installation has finished successfully, log into your vCenter vSphere client. Here you will find this new plugin which is called ‘Dell EMC NetWorker’. If you click on that, go ahead and type in your NMC username and password and make sure you type in the NetWorker server name and hit login. Here you will be greeted with this interface and allow you to perform backup and restore operations for NetWorker.
When you first time log in, the loading will take some time while it’s loading the policy list and then you will be able to see all the policies that’s already been configured in the NMC for the VM backups. You will be also able to perform restores from this interface but we will not be covering this in this video. Now let’s have a look at some situations with the installation fail.
Sometimes when you right-click and then try to install the vCenter plugin, what you might encounter is an issue like this where the installation progress bar will pause and will not proceed further. Notice how last time the installation only takes a few seconds but this time it is still loading and if you leave it like that, it will remain at this for an indefinite amount of time. Alternatively, you might encounter an error message in the result window saying the installation has failed.
To troubleshoot this issue, we will need to enable the Java console to see exactly what’s going on. To do this, firstly we need to close the NMC window. If you have it stuck like this, you will need to use Task Manager to kill the NMC process. Now to enable the Java console, if you are using NetWorker Runtime Environment, you can just right-click on the NMC shortcut, open file location and scroll down to the "javacpl.exe".
If you use your own Java JRE, then go ahead and go to the Windows Control Panel and you will find the Java Control Panel icon in there. Open this inside the Java Control Panel program, go to Advanced and in the second option here where it says Java console, choose ‘Show Console’, apply and okay. Once you’ve done that, let’s go ahead and launch the NMC again. You’ll notice this popup window on the left-hand side with the title ‘Java Console’. What we need to do is make sure you click into the console and then press 5.
You’ll notice the line says ‘Trace level set to 5 completed’ means we have enabled the logging level to 5. Once you’ve done that, go ahead and log into the NMC and let’s reproduce the problem again, right-click and install. When you have the issue reproduced, go back to the Java console. You can copy this and put into Notepad for easy view. Now in this case, we can see clearly the issue we are having here is this error.
The ‘UnknownHostException’ indicates that the NMC server or the client is unable to resolve "nsr.amer.lan". Now we can confirm that by coming to here and ping NSR M.L and we can confirm that it’s now resolvable. So to resolve the issue, fix the DNS. Make sure that in your environment you can successfully resolve NSR server and then the installation will be complete successfully. Now this concludes the video NetWorker vProxy plug-in installation and troubleshooting.
Thank you.
